Seeds and Their People: The Seed Festival in Samparidisa

To explore the agrobiodiversity in Samparadisa Village, a seed festival was organized by Jayanta K. Sarma, managed entirely by the local community. The festival highlighted local seeds and products that are regularly used as food or medicine. A total of 24 varieties of wild edibles from Hagra (forest), homestead gardens, and Padain (jhum/current jhum) were showcased. Additionally, 114 seeds out of the total 138 were cultivated in Padain (jhum), Hadi (wet terrace), Nolai-hapahi (homestead garden), and Hadamsa (jhum fallow area). The festival revealed the village’s rich repository of agrobiodiversity, which sustains their traditional food system.
